Sustainably Sourced Timber Joinery Melbourne

CERES Fair Wood offers locally sourced quality timbers from sustainably-grown forests. By connecting small-scale growers and millers to timber buyers, we form part of the purposeful trade of CERES. CERES is an environmental education centre, community garden, urban farm and social enterprise hub spread across four locations, linked by the Merri and Darebin Creeks in Wurundjeri Country, Melbourne.

We know where our wood comes from and often, its exact source and history. Following a strict timber selection criteria process is CERES Fair Wood's difference.

Our Joinery Products

We carry a curated range of furniture timbers sourced from agroforestry. Agroforestry is the integration of trees and shrubs on farm landscapes. These trees are used in multiple ways to benefit the environment, animals (by providing shelter), aesthetics, and increase the farm’s economic value. Adding more trees to farmland and using this timber for building is much more sustainable than cutting into natural forests and bushland, ruining natural ecosystems. Increasing the number of trees also lowers the levels of carbon emissions in our environment.

It is worth talking to us if you are building furniture, we may be able to source you something unusual. If you are looking to build with timber that is a bit different and unique talk to us! We may be able to source it for you to help you achieve your vision.

Our joinery timber is constantly changing. At the moment we have in stock: salvaged Elm, Messmate, salvaged Blackwood, recycled Turpentine, Shining Gum, Spotted Gum, Sugar Gum, Manna Gum, Silky Oak, Red Gum, Grey Gum, Blue Gum, Silver Wattle, Black Wattle and Cypress Macrocarpa. Please refer to the below products’ photo gallery for an example of the stock.

We have varying dimensions of DAR or rough-sawn.

What is timber joinery?

Timber joinery is a part of woodworking in which you join multiple pieces of timber together to create more complex items such as furniture, frames, shelves and more. Joinery involves cutting precise shapes and notches to fit into each other to make engineered structures from multiple pieces of timber.

What is the difference between carpentry and joinery?

The difference between carpentry and joinery is that carpentry involves building structures on-site whereas joinery, in the most traditional sense, means that joiners have joined timber in a workshop.

We offer timber for many needs including cladding, decking, batten screening, landscaping, fencing, veggie bed kits, flooring, lining and firewood.

What is joinery-grade timber?

Timber for indoor joinery should be of quality grade 2, to be considered strong enough for certain joinery uses in which the furniture will need to carry weight, all outdoor applications should be of quality grade 1. Joinery timber can have more knots and sap than other timber uses.

What can you make with joinery timber?

There are endless possibilities of what to make when it comes to timber joinery. You can build benches, seats, a birdhouse, a planter, a picnic table, a window planter, a garden arbour, patio chairs, a privacy screen and a bed frame, just for a few ideas!
